The 112th National Day Reception of the Republic of China (Taiwan), hosted by TECO Sydney, was held at the historic landmark, the Fullerton Hotel, on the evening of 5th October.
DG David Wu and Mrs. Vicki Wu were delighted to celebrate the National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) with over 350 dignitaries from the Federal and NSW State Parliament, Taiwanese communities, the business sector, the cultural and arts industry, and the media. Not only did we make new friends, but we were also pleasantly surprised to see many old friends who had become less active re-engage and join the celebration.
In his speech, DG Wu extended heartfelt gratitude for the friendship and longstanding support from all our guests. As the host of the National Day Reception for the first time, DG Wu mentioned that during the last 84 days since assuming this post, he visited many political and business leaders and shared Taiwan's stories. He was truly overwhelmed by the turnout, which fully reflects the Australian friends' recognition of Taiwan's democratic and economic achievements.
Federal MP, the Hon. Paul Fletcher, shared in his experience co-leading the Federal bipartisan delegation to Taiwan in his remarks. During the trip, they had the opportunity to meet President Tsai Ing-Wen and senior officials, and he was deeply impressed by the vibrant democracy and the remarkable achievements in the semiconductor and hi-tech industries of Taiwan.
Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism, the Hon. Mark Buttigieg, MLC, conveyed congratulations on behalf of the NSW Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper. He expressed a deep appreciation for the contributions of the Taiwanese communities to the social development of Australia. He also looked forward to further strengthening the bonds between Taiwan and Australia for mutual prosperity while maintaining the diverse values of liberal democracy.
During their speeches, guest speakers reiterated that Taiwan is Australia's essential partner in safeguarding liberal democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. They emphasized that Australia will always be Taiwan's "winter friend" and pledged to stand together with Taiwan, especially during challenging times. The voices of justice were met with rounds of applause from the audience.
