364 Australian university students will take part in the New Colombo Plan (NCP) by short and semester-length programs in Taiwan in 2020. The number of students has doubled since last year.
Through the 2020 New Colombo Plan Mobility program, the Australian Government has awarded 354 students of 12 Australian universities from a range of disciplines to participate in 31 mobility projects to live, study and undertake internships in Taiwan. Under the NCP Scholarship program, 10 NCP scholars chose Taiwan as their study destination who can take up to 19 months of study duration in Taiwan’s universities to immerse themselves in the environment, learn Chinese language, further their studies and gain work experience through internships with organisations.
On 26 November, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Australia welcomed 8 NCP Taiwan scholars by organising an introduction presentation and lunch meeting. Deputy Representative Ken Wei-Chung Lai assured scholars a richly rewarding experience provided by Taiwan’s democratic society and inclusive culture. On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Executive Director Dr Aaron Chen presented a comprehensive ‘Study in Taiwan’ pack related to resources on universities in Taiwan, Chinese language training centres, living information, visa regulation and scholarship opportunities.
New Colombo Plan Scholarships are open to Australian undergraduates aged 18–28 currently studying at Australian universities. Since New Colombo Plan was introduced by Australian Government, Taiwan has hosted a total of about 1,011 Australian students to come to Taiwan to study and undertake work-based experiences. The bilateral relationship between Taiwan and Australia is strengthening.
