Award-Winning Coffee with a Taiwanese Heart, Australian Spirit
On November 6, Director-General Fan visited young entrepreneur Michael Yeh, the owner of O'GaBee & Co. Coffee Roastery at Brisbane Quarter, and shared in his experiences and challenges of starting a business in Australia. Recently, the O'GaBee brand triumphed at the 2024 Australian Coffee Awards’ Golden Bean competition, winning 2 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze medals!
Originally an IT major in Australia, Michael first entered the coffee industry over a decade ago with Gloria Jeans. During the pandemic, he opened his first O'GaBee & Co. Coffee at Brisbane Square in the city center, establishing a pathway to success. Utilizing his IT skills and experience from a major coffee chain, he developed a customized business system. With solid coffee roasting and brewing techniques as his foundation, he began building the O'GaBee coffee empire, expanding to locations in the CBD on Queens St, as well as in Chermside and Birkdale. Now, he even helps new café owners with business operations, from store contracts to roasting championship-quality beans.
The Yeh family has always loved coffee, even naming their dog “GaBee,” a playful homage to coffee. To help Australians speak Taiwanese, they named the shop "O'GaBee," which many locals now pronounce even more authentically than native Taiwanese speakers!
For Michael, running O'Gabee with the efficiency of a Taiwanese business while infusing it with the friendly, laid-back Australian vibe means every regular customer feels at home at O'GaBee. Michael also plans to introduce specialty beans from Taiwan’s Alishan to compete internationally, hoping to promote Taiwan’s unique coffee on the world stage.
If you’re ever in Brisbane, stop by one of their locations at Brisbane Quarter, Queens St, Chermside, or Birkdale to taste these award-winning coffees!
