On 22 June, Director-General Ray Ming-tse Lu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Melbourne, accompanied by Director Tony Tai, met with members of the 2026 Taiwan Tourism Delegation to Oceania to exchange views on strengthening tourism links, expanding sports tourism cooperation, and enhancing people-to-people exchanges between Taiwan and Australia.
Director-General Lu noted that Melbourne is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and as a major host city for international sporting and cultural events, including the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open, and world-class performing arts events. He observed that Melbourne’s strong sporting culture aligns closely with Taiwan’s growing sports tourism sector, which features internationally recognised triathlons, ultra-marathons, and open-water swimming events. Such complementarities offer promising opportunities for future collaboration between tourism industries on both sides.
Later that evening, Director-General Lu, accompanied by colleagues from the office, attended a tourism promotion event held at the Park Hyatt Melbourne and delivered remarks. He highlighted the continued growth in two-way travel and people-to-people exchanges between Taiwan and Australia, noting that sporting events have become an important platform for bilateral engagement, attracting many Australian participants to Taiwan while encouraging them to further explore the island.
Director-General Lu further emphasised that Taiwan is not merely a transit point in Northeast Asia, but a destination worthy of deeper exploration in its own right. With China Airlines continuing to operate direct flights between Melbourne and Taipei, he encouraged Australian travellers to include Taiwan in their future travel or business itineraries and experience first-hand Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality.
