In the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, on January 26, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès condemned China’s coercion against Lithuania, stating that China has exerted significant reprisals of diplomatic, political and commercial nature against Lithuania after the latter’s decisions to welcome the establishment of the “Taiwanese Representative Office” in Vilnius and leave the “17+1” group. The scale of the coercive measure has affected the exports of many other countries which is unacceptable. Belgium has expressed its solidarity with Lithuania and calls on Beijing to honor its international commitments.
We welcome Ms. Wilmès speaking up for Lithuania. Like-minded democracies should reinforce cooperation to counter the challenges posed by authoritarianism against the international free trade system, and defend the core values of the free international society.
