We welcome the European Parliament passing the resolutions on the implementation of the common foreign and security policy (CFSP)-2025 annual report and the implementation of the common security and defence policy (CSDP)-2025 annual report on January 21st. Both reports reaffirm the European Parliament’s strong support for Taiwan’s security and democracy.
In the two resolutions, the European Parliament:
• Reaffirms that the Taiwan Strait is international waters, and supports the right to freedom of navigation by European democracies and their like-minded partners
• Condemns China’s intimidations and threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding international waters, including large-scale air and sea manoeuvres such as the ‘Justice Mission 2025’ and the ‘Strait Thunder-2025A’ exercises in April 2025 which jeopardise stability in the region
• Calls for the EU and its Member States to ensure, through clear and consistent signalling, that ongoing attempts to unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, particularly by means of force or coercion, cannot be accepted and will have high costs
• Recalls that the UN Charter’s explicit prohibition of the use of force applies to the [South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait]
• Underscores that China’s territorial claims over Taiwan have no basis in international law, that neither side is subordinate to the other and that only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent the Taiwanese people
• Calls on the Commission and the Member States to closely coordinate on security policy with Taiwan and partners in the South China Sea, including regular naval presence and joint exercises; further calls on the Commission to fulfil its commitment to the European Parliament to work towards effective deterrence against a possible invasion of Taiwan
• Calls for regular exchanges between the EU and its Taiwanese counterparts on relevant security issues and for stronger cooperation on countering FIMI and the sabotage of undersea cables
• Opposes the People’s Republic of China’s constant distortion of UN Resolution 2758 and its efforts to block Taiwan’s participation in multilateral organisations
On behalf of the peace-loving Taiwanese people, the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium welcomes and thanks the European Parliament for sending a clear and consistent message to uphold the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We remain committed to deepening Taiwan-EU relations and will continue working to expand our partnership in areas of mutual interest.
