Representative Harry H. T. Tseng urged Canada to continue to support Taiwan when he addressed a special meeting of the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations that took place on November 1, 2022, for a study on Canada-China Relations with a focus on Canada-Taiwan relations.
In his opening remarks, Representative Tseng touched on a range of issues, including the impact of the 20th CCP National Congress on cross-strait ties and the region and Taiwan’s call for Canada to stand with Taiwan.
A key request that he brought up repeatedly is Canada’s support to launch formal talks with Taiwan on a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Arrangement (FIPA). He has also pleaded with Canada to support Taiwan’s inclusion in the CPTPP.
Representative Tseng pointed out that Xi’s refusal to rule out the use of force should be alarming for the international community. If Beijing’s expansionist ambitions are not curbed, he added, they will not stop at Taiwan.
“If Taiwan falls, democracy falls,” he told members of the Committee.
