The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto held a National Day reception for the Republic of China (Taiwan) on October 4, 2024, at the historic Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Numerous Canadian political figures attended to show their support for Taiwan's democracy and emphasized that Canada will continue to stand with Taiwan.
Director General Jin-Ling Chen highlighted that Taiwan is a positive force in the world, committed to safeguarding democratic values and working alongside democratic allies to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait and globally, as well as to create a resilient democratic supply chain and a prosperous economy.
Director General Chen noted that over her three-plus years in office, she has seen increasing support for Taiwan from various sectors in Canada. The Canadian government has emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait in joint statements during bilateral and multilateral meetings. Taiwan remains a positive force in the world, steadfast in its democratic values, and will continue to work with democratic allies to uphold peace in the Taiwan Strait and worldwide, while collaborating to build a resilient democratic supply chain and a thriving economy.
Approximately 300 guests from Canadian politics, business, academia, law enforcement, and the consular community attended the reception. The event opened with the "Overseas Youth Cultural Ambassadors" (FASCA), composed of second-generation Taiwanese Canadians, leading the singing of the Taiwanese and Canadian national anthems. A youth group made up of Taiwanese, Japanese, Hong Kong, and Canadian participants performed street dance as the grand finale, showcasing the vibrant fusion of Taiwan's younger generation and diverse ethnicities. Taiwan's black bear and the "Three Little Swine" electronic music group mingled with guests for photos, creating a joyful and warm atmosphere.
