This week, artisans from the pataRungan Banana Fiber Workshop of Hualien’s Xinshe Tribe visited the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto to share the story of the revival of Kavalan banana fiber weaving- one of the most cherish art of Taiwan's Indigenous cultures.
Once nearly lost, this unique tradition has been brought back through the efforts of the Kavalan people and Taiwan–Canada cultural collaboration.
Kavalan culture advocate Ngolan shared how seeing 19th-century Kavalan banana fiber textiles, brought back by Dr. Leslie Mackey in 1880s and now preserved at ROM strengthened her commitment tocarrying on this ancestral craft.
Across the Pacific, this exchange has helped more Canadians discover the richness of Taiwan’s Indigenous cultures.
