Thanks to Taiwan’s assistance, the Caboni Multi Species Hatchery Station is able to produce shrimp larvae to support shrimp farming in Fiji. The Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) held “The 2nd Symposium on the Cultivation of White Shrimp in Fiji” to showcase the techniques of shrimp farming on 18 November.
Joseph Chow, the Representative of Taipei Trade Office in Fiji, said in his remarks that Taiwan kicked off the first 5-year aquaculture cooperation project in Fiji in 2017, which has produced fruitful results thanks to the close collaboration of the Ministry of Fisheries and the dedication of TTM’s Specialist Dr. Robert Chang. Taiwan Government will launch the second 5-year aquaculture project in 2022 with an aim of assisting Fiji in expanding its aquaculture industry. He added, the technical cooperation between Taiwan and Fiji dates back to 1971, the next year just after Fiji gained its independence, when Taiwan set up its technical mission in Fiji. Since then TTM has spared no effort to assist Fiji in agriculture, ranging from sugar cane farming in the early days to the farming high value-added produce like guava and dragon fruit today. To further assist Fiji in agricultural development, Taiwan Government is setting up two smart farms in Nausori, which will house two smart greenhouses, one tissue culture lab and among other facilities.
The Fijian government is grateful to Taiwan for its enormous assistance in aquaculture. In 2016 the devastating Winston Tropical Cyclone caused great damage to the Station. The Station was fully recovered from the disaster and has been fully fledged today by virtue of the tremendous assistance from Taiwan. The Station will soon be able to produce sea water fish fry to further support fish farming industry. (E)
