Taiwan's representative to Fiji, Mr. Joseph Chow, has handed over a donation of medical supplies to Labasa Hospital, marking another milestone in the strong partnership between Taiwan and Fiji in the health sector. The donation, worth 222,500 Fijian Dollars (100,000 USD), includes dialysis machines, portable reverse osmosis water filtration units, and medical consumables, which will be used to establish a Blood Dialysis Center in Labasa Hospital in Vanua Levu island. The donation was made by Taiwan's Cathay General Hospital in collaboration with the Taiwan government.
In his remarks at the hand-over ceremony, Representative of Taipei Trade Office in Fiji Joseph Chow highlighted the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji, which have caused 80% of deaths over the last few years, according to the Ministry of Health. The number is growing every year, making it increasingly important to provide better medical care to chronic disease patients. The establishment of a Blood Dialysis Center at Labasa Hospital will help address this issue by providing better medical services to patients on Vanua Levu, who previously had to travel to Viti Levu for dialysis.
Labasa Hospital expressed their gratitude for Taiwan's generous donation. They also hope to continue their medical partnership with Taiwan and learn from each other to deepen medical exchange and cooperation.
Taiwan has been providing medical assistance to Fiji since 2006, and its medical teams from Cathay General Hospital have conducted more than 8,000 outpatient services and numerous surgeries in urban and rural areas of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu since 2014. Taiwan's medical diplomacy reflects its commitment to global health and its belief that no one should be left behind when it comes to medical care.
Taiwan's representative, Mr. Joseph Chow, reaffirmed Taiwan's commitment to supporting Fiji's healthcare system and promoting global health, saying, "Taiwan will continue to provide assistance to Fiji in the health sector, as well as in other areas, to further strengthen our friendship and partnership."
