About
The Taiwan Scholarship aims to encourage outstanding international students (excluding students from mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau) to pursue a university degree in Taiwan.
The scholarship is managed in accordance with Taiwan Scholarship Program Directions (see Appendix 1) of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Scholarship Benefits
Scholarship recipients will receive the following:
- Tuition and Miscellaneous expenses: Up to NT$40,000 per semester to cover tuition and miscellaneous fees (including credit fees). If the combined total of tuition and fees exceeds NT$40,000, the scholarship recipient will be liable for any outstanding amount. The following items are not covered by the scholarship: administrative fees, thesis advising fees, insurance premiums, accommodation, and internet access.
- Stipend: Monthly living allowance to cover living expenses during staying in Taiwan. Recipients pursuing an undergraduate degree will receive a monthly stipend of NT$15,000; recipients pursuing a graduate degree (MA or PhD) will receive a monthly stipend of NT$20,000.

Available Scholarships
Up to eight students may be selected by Taipei Representative Office in Hungary as scholarship recipients for 2023.
Duration of Scholarships
The duration of the scholarship is based on the academic degree pursed by the recipient:
- Bachelor degree: up to four years
- Master’s degree: up to two years
- Doctoral degree: up to four years
If a recipient completes one degree and then pursues an advanced degree, they may claim the scholarship up to a maximum of five years.
- The budget for the Taiwan Scholarship runs on an annual basis from September 1 until August 31 the following year. Recipients must arrive in Taiwan and officially register at their university/college by the specified deadline, unless a delay has been approved by their university and the MOE. Recipients who fail to arrive in Taiwan to register by the aforesaid deadline will forfeit their scholarship.
- Recipients will start receiving monthly stipends beginning the month they register at their university/college. Stipends will be disbursed until the scholarship period ends, or the recipient graduates, withdraws from studies, is suspended or expelled from their university/college, or the scholarship is revoked.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to apply, an applicant must:
- Be a citizen from one of the following countries- Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo.
- Have a high school diploma or a higher degree;
- Be applying to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree in Taiwan;
- Hold an outstanding academic record; and
- Demonstrate good moral character.
Applicants are NOT eligible if they:
- Are R.O.C. nationals or overseas Chinese students.
- Are R.O.C. Alien Permanent Resident Certificate or Taiwan Employment Gold Card holders.
- Are already registered or have obtained student status at a university / college in Taiwan. (This restriction does not apply to students who are graduating and wish to pursue a higher degree.)
- Previously studied for a degree in Taiwan and are applying to pursue another degree at the same level (e.g. they earned a master’s degree in Taiwan and wish to pursue another master’s).
- Are an exchange student or dual/joint degree student who has been admitted to a university/college in Taiwan in accordance with an academic cooperation agreement between that university/college and their home university/college overseas.
- Have already been recipients of the Taiwan Scholarship for a total of five years.
- Have had, in the past, their Taiwan Scholarship or Huayu Enrichment Scholarship revoked by the MOE.
- Are receiving another form of scholarship or subsidy from the R.O.C. (Taiwan) government or an academic institution in Taiwan. This restriction does not apply to subsidies provided by the recipient’s university/college to cover tuition and other fees that remain outstanding after the scholarship payment.
Application
Taipei Representative Office in Hungary only accepts applications from citizens of Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo.
Applicants should then apply for the scholarship program on-line (https://Taiwanscholarship.moe.gov.tw/Apply). The system is open from February 1 to March 31, 2023.
Applicants must apply on-line and then print out application form. Then they should send the application form together with supplement documents to Taipei Representative Office in Hungary (TRO) by March 31, 2023.
An application package must include:
- 2023 Taiwan Scholarship Application Form (printed out from the on-line application form)
- A copy of the applicant’s passport or other nationality certificates.
- A copy of the highest degree and academic transcripts.
Documents issued in a language other than Chinese or English must be translated into Chinese or English, and the translated documents must be authenticated.
- A copy of a document proving the applicant has applied to a university / college in Taiwan.
Applicants must apply for admission directly to the universities/colleges by the deadlines established by each university/college.
Supporting documents including application form, remittance form showing payment of the application fee, e-mail or written notification from the university acknowledging receipt of the application.
- A copy of a language proficiency certificate if applicable.
A copy of a test certificate or tests results demonstrating attainment of Level 3 or above on the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL). This requirement only applies to students who will be studying in a program which is not taught exclusively in English.
If the English-language degree program has not been accredited by the MOE, then you must provide a document formally issued by the university to prove your degree program is fully taught in English. Please refer to 2023 List of Universities/Colleges Providing Degree Programs Taught in English (See appendix 3) to confirm.
- Two letters of reference, signed and in sealed envelopes.
Reference letters should be written by principals or professors/instructors of the academic institution at which the applicant studied, or supervisors. Photocopies and email versions of letters of recommendation will not be accepted.
- A copy of the Taiwan Scholarship Terms of Agreement, signed by the applicant (see Appendix 4).
Selection
Taipei Representative Office in Hungary will review all complete applications. When necessary, TRO may schedule interviews with applicants. Following review, TRO will select scholarship candidates and waitlisted candidates. All applicants will be notified of results no later than May 31, 2023.
Selected candidates must submit a photocopy of an admission letter issued by one university/college by June 30, 2023. If a candidate who is not admitted into a university/college in Taiwan, he will lose the Taiwan Scholarship.
Additional Information
All Hungarian scholarship recipients are welcome to participate in the Taiwan Alumni Association in Hungary (TAA,匈牙利留台校友會). TAA aims to bring individuals together who have previously studied in Taiwan and are now located in Hungary. TAA organizes events for members to share experience, to promote dialogue on culture or language, and to help networking with fellow Taiwan alumni.
