About
The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan). It aims to encourage international students (not including students from mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao) to study Chinese (Huayu) in Taiwan.
The scholarship is managed in accordance with the Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) International Student Directions (please refer to Appendix 1 below).
Scholarship Benefit
The scholarship is in the form of a monthly stipend of NT$25,000.
The stipend is intended to support costs such as tuition, books, rent, and other living expenses. The applicants are advised to prepare a fund no less than 3,000 US dollars in order to cover cost of the initial period of their stay (such as housing cost and pre-payment for tuition).
Duration
Applicants must choose to apply for studying Mandarin for three, six, nine, or twelve months between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025.
Scholarship recipients who fail to arrive in Taiwan and register in person at their Mandarin Learning Center (MLC) by the specified deadline will forfeit their scholarship. Recipients will begin receiving their stipends approximately two months after they register and study at their MLC, depending on the administration of each MLC. Stipends will discontinue following the student’s final month of study or if the scholarship is revoked.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must:
- Be a citizen from one of the following counties: Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo;
- Be eighteen years of age or older;
- Hold an outstanding academic record; and
- Demonstrate good moral character.
An applicant may NOT apply if they:
- Are an overseas Chinese student or a citizen of the R.O.C.;
- Are currently registered as a student at a Mandarin Language Centre or have studied for a degree at any university/college in Taiwan;
- Have received the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship or Taiwan Scholarship in the past;
- Will be an exchange student in Taiwan during the scholarship period;
- Are currently receiving financial assistance from the R.O.C. (Taiwan) government or any educational institution in Taiwan.
Application
Applicants must first apply for the Mandarin courses in one of the language centers (Please see appendix 2).
Applicants should then apply for the scholarship program on-line (https://Taiwanscholarship.moe.gov.tw/Apply). The application system is open from February 1 to April 5, 2024.
Applicants should print out the application forms from the on-line system, submit the following documents to Taipei Representative Office in Hungary (address: Rákóczi street 1-3, Budapest 1088, Hungary)no later than April 5, 2024. (Please ensure the envelope is postmarked). Applicants can also choose to deliver the application package to the Office in person by April 5, 2024.
- A completed Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Application Form (printed out from the on-line application system)
- A photocopy of your passport or another document proving your citizenship
- Photocopies of your highest academic degree/certificate and your complete academic transcripts
- A photocopy of a document proving you have already applied to a Mandarin Language Centre (e.g. application form, remittance form showing your payment of the application fee, e-mail or written notification from the MLC/school acknowledging receipt of the application). To search for recognized Mandarin Language Centers in Taiwan, please see Appendix 2.
- Signed copy of the Terms of Agreement (see Appendix 3)
- Two letters of recommendation. These letters should be written by professors, instructors, or supervisors.
* Applicants who have taken the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) will receive priority consideration. If you have a TOCFL certificate, please include a photocopy inside your application package.
** Please note that no documents submitted as part of the application package will be returned to applicants.
Selection Process
After reviewing all applications and evaluating applicants based on their past achievements, motivation, and potential for success, Taipei Representative Office in Hungary will select scholarship winners and waitlisted candidates. The result of the selection will be notified by the end of May.
Successful candidates must submit their photocopy of admission letter from their MLC before June 30, 2024 to finalize the scholarship selection process. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
*Applicants who current reside in these five countries (Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo) will receive priority consideration.
