The Taipei Representative Office alongside the Dublin University of Science and Technology (DIT) hosted the “2018 Taiwanese Cooking Demonstration” on May 8th – 10th. A total of 200 people, including those in Irish politics, culture, education, media, catering, gourmet experts and overseas Taiwanese attended the event.
The event was overwhelming successful and highly praised by all sectors. The honoured guest chef this year who leads the demonstration was Prof. Chieh-Kuei Lee, from “Hsuan Chuang University”. During the demonstration, Prof. Lee expertly combined locally sourced Irish ingredients with Taiwanese traditional recipes to create a wonderful demonstration of multi-channel and classic dishes such as beef noodles, sweet and sour fish fillet, stir-friend chicken fillet with potatoes, stir-fried rice with pineapples and prawns and stir-fry lamb and leeks. The expert cooking techniques and intricate plate decoration also added to the impressive array of dishes served by Chef Lee.
At the event, Representative Simon S.K. Tu spoke about the wide variety offered by Taiwan’s traditional meals, which have local, Chinese, Western, Japanese and Hakka influences. With such a range of tastes offered, there is always something that will appeal to anyone from all walks of life!
Taiwanese cuisine is undoubtedly internationally recognised, which is proved by the number of gourmet restaurants in Taiwan that received 1 to 3 Michelin Star ratings in April of this year. The Michelin Star award is one of the most prestigious and internationally known honours in the world of fine cuisine and therefore an accomplishment that Taiwan can be very proud of.
At the second event, which takes place at the “Dublin School of Mandarin Chinese” on May 10th, the dishes demonstrated were influenced by the wave of healthy vegetarian cuisine in Taiwan, and utilise fresh vegetables and seafood. Those that attend the event have the opportunity to taste all the dishes that are demonstrated.
