Director General Stephen S.C. Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre (TECC) in Chennai visited DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum on June 11 and was warmly received by the museum's management board. Both sides had fruitful exchanges on the museum's collections, cultural parallels between India and Taiwan, and the possibility of bringing Taiwanese arts into the museum's galleries.
DakshinaChitra means "a picture of the south" is a living-history museum located 25 km south of Chennai, founded by the Madras Craft Foundation in 1996. It houses 19 reconstructed historical houses, craft bazaars, textile workshops, and folk performances, preserving the rich heritage of South India.
The visit was productive. Director General Hsu appreciated the depth of South Indian culture and noted many similarities with Taiwanese heritage in craftsmanship, folk arts, and architectural traditions.
