Two nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis made history on
Wednesday by becoming the first recipients of scholarships to study medicine in Taiwan through the joint partnership between the Governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The request from scholarships in the new area of medicine was made by the Federation’s Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas during his most recent visit to the Asian nation two years ago when he met with top administrators of the university as well as high Taiwan officials including the President and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
At Wednesday’s ceremony attended by St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and Taiwan’s Resident Ambassador, His Excellency Miguel Tsao, the Ms. Monique Lescott of St. Kitts and Ms. Hadassah Willett of were presented with their certificates and travelling documents.
Thirteen other St. Kitts and Nevis students will study Mandarin, agriculture, fisheries, environment, technology, engineering, business administration and tourism.
Congratulating the awardees, Ambassador Tsao noted the 15 students will study in Taiwan for four to five years and hoped that upon completion they will return to the federation to participate in the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“It goes without saying this will be a turning point and a stepping stone in your academic journey. I hope all of you can capitalize on your studying, integrate with other Taiwanese and international students, do your utmost effort to enrich your knowledge and sharpen your skills, never forget that your are representing St. Kitts and Nevis. Our hope is when you get your degree in Taiwan, you will contribute what you have learnt for the development of your beautiful twin island country, St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Ambassador Tsao.
He pointed out that the Embassy of Republic of China (Taiwan) has been working in very close cooperation with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to promote the scholarship and create the lucrative opportunity together for the people.
“The new high number of awardees reflects our joint effort of the two governments and peoples,” added the top Taiwan diplomat who took the opportunity to thank Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas for his “keen emphasis, care and dedication toward education,” Minister Nigel Carty and Minister Patrice Nisbett “for their seamless coordination and providing channel-through the above-mentioned two ministries.”
Ambassador Tsao also thanked Permanent Secretary Ionie Willet for her “effective and hard-working team and for the impeccable and unrelenting effort to help all applicants in the due process.”
“My good friends, awardees, we are ordinary people, but we can astound all by our painstaking effort and persistence. The road ahead is long; the climbs are still steep, let us overcome the hurdle ahead and enjoy the fruits of success later. I’m looking forward to your return to St. Kitts and Nevis upon your graduation with shining and brand new degrees,” said Ambassador Tsao.
