This year will be the second time that Taiwan holds a festival for one of its famous local dishes: braised pork on rice.
Taiwan’s famous braised pork rice, or lu rou fan, is made with a fragrant sauce that’s 30 percent lean minced pork and 70 percent fatty minced pork. The special sauce is poured over white rice to make this delicious specialty. The dish is not only popular as local street food but is now commonly served at 5-star hotels. Even senior chefs are passing on the recipe to young upcoming chefs who try innovative ways to present the traditional dish, such as this bowl of braised pork rice decorated with gold foil.
Due to its popularity, the economics ministry is holding the Braised Pork on Rice Festival for the second time this year. The event took off on Thursday at the Taipei Main Station with 20 restaurants islandwide presenting the dish in different ways. The ministry intends to hold food fairs and Taiwanese style roadside banquets to promote the festival. A list of top ten outstanding braised pork on rice dishes will also be selected from over 100 restaurants to recommend to the public.
The ministry also plans to take the chefs to attend the Taiwan Plus 2018 culture fair in Tokyo in September. They want to promote the braised pork on rice dish worldwide. They think perhaps even one day it can become an international brand like McDonald’s.
