Taiwan-born movie director Ang Lee will be honored this year by the Directors Guild of America (DGA) for his contribution to the film industry. The guild made the announcement on Wednesday.
DGA president Thomas Schlamme said that New York, an epicenter of entertainment, labor and politics, is “where a legendary director like Lee, as a budding Taiwanese filmmaker, came to get started.”
Lee’s assistant conveyed on Thursday that Lee not only feels honored but warmhearted and that he will continue to do his best. Lee is currently working on the film Gemini Man starring Will Smith.
63-year old Lee has been nominated four times by the guild for Outstanding Directorial Achievement and was awarded the title for the films Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain. Lee is also the only Asian director to have won two Oscars for best director, in Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi.
The 2018 DGA Honors ceremony will be held in New York City on October 18.
