A 6-member delegation of the Mackay Memorial Hospital, led by Vice Superintendent CHIEN Ding-Kuo(簡定國), visited Palau from August 15 to 19, 2024. During their visit, they call onAmbassador Jessica C. Lee(黎倩儀), Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the Republic of Palau, Hon. Uduch Sengebau Senior,Vice President and Minister of Justice,Hon. Gaafar Uherbelau,Minister of Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration (SSA), Healthcare Fund(HCF) and theBelau National Hospital.
This is the first official visitof the Mackay Memorial Hospital as per the invitation of Vice President Sengebau Senior. The membersof the delegationincludeMr. TSAI, Weide(蔡維德), Director, International Medical Service Center, Ms. HSU, Wan-Ti(徐婉蒂), Deputy Director, Mr. CHANG, Yang-Chung(章揚宗), Coordinator,Mr. CHANG, Ting-Kuo(張定國), Chief, Orthopedics Department, and Mr. SUN, Shen(孫珅), senior Cardiologist.
Ambassador Jessica C. Leepointed out that Taiwanese medical personnel is the best demonstration that Taiwan is Force for Good. Our government has been committed to improving Palau's medical standards and promoting public health over the years.Right after Taiwan established the diplomatic relation with Palau in 1999, the Mackay Memorial Hospital dispatchedmedical teams to Palau until 2005.And from 2007 to present, the Shin Kong Hospital conductsthe international medical cooperation programs. "Taiwan can help, and Taiwan is helping." During the Covid-19pandemic, many Palauanpatients werereferred toTaiwanesehospitals such asShin KongHospital and MackayMemorial Hospitalfor various medical treatments. CurrentlytheMackay Memorial Hospital has assisted over 200 Palau referral patients, and its warm reception has been well received. Ambassador Leebid a heartfelt welcome to the delegation, and recommended them to visit Palau’s world-famous Rock Islands Southern Lagoon. Hopefully she could welcomeMackay Memorial Hospital’s medical teams soon when they provide free medical clinic service in Palau.
Mr. Clinton Ngemaes, Administrator, SSA, expressed his gratitude for Taiwan's continued medical assistance. To his knowledge, Palauan patients referred to Taiwan were amazed by the high quality of the medical service. After learning that the MacKay Memorial Hospital wished to promote preventive medical education besides providing medical services, he felt deeply touched because this demonstrated that they truly care about the people of Palau.
Vice President Sengebau Senior stated that she was deeply grateful and for the medical treatmentsand care her family member received recentlyatthe MacKay Memorial Hospital. She sincerely welcomed the delegation, and applauded for the idea of helping Palau to promote preventive medical education. Through their visit, she hoped that more Palauan people get to know the Mackay Memorial Hospital, and she looked forward to further collaboration with them.
The Mackay Memorial Hospital has branches in Tamsui (New Taipei City), Taipei, Hsinchu, and Taitung. Its International Medical Service Center was established in 2008. It providesinternationalfree clinics and medical servicesglobal-wide. To present, they have assisted over 200 referral patients from Palau.
