In November 2023, the Taiwanese government donated to Palau’s "Post-Pandemic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan," which aims to enhance Palau's post-pandemic economic recovery and improve public health medical facilities. After more than a year of renovations, the central chiller system, surgical wards, and nurses’ working station at Palau National Hospital were successfully upgraded. Additionally, dental chairs were purchased to enhance the hospital's infrastructure, benefiting the people of Palau who seek medical care.
A ceremony to mark the completion was held on February 7, 2025, attended by H.E. Amb. Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Palau, Hon. Raynold "Arnold" Oilouch, Vice President and Minister of Health and Human Sources (MHHS) of Palau, Dr. Ngirachisau Mekoll, Director of Palau’s MHHS’s Hospital and Clinical Services Bureau, Palau Ms. Darnelle Worswick, Administrator of Palau’s MHHS, Ms. Antonnette O. Merur, Chief of Palau National Hospital, and Ms. Audrey Amalei, Surgical Ward Nurse Supervisor of Palau National Hospital.
Ambassador Lee expressed that Taiwan’s government, recognizing the devastating impact of the pandemic on Palau's economy, has been committed to enhancing Palau’s healthcare environment and facilities for the welfare of its people. With the spirit of "when others are hungry, we are hungry; when others are drowning, we are drowning," Taiwan provided assistance on projects where Palau needed urgent help. She was pleased to witness the completion of the hospital’s renovation and additionally donated two Acer laptops, further solidifying the Taiwan-Palau "partnership" and proving the steadfast friendship between the two countries.
Vice President and Minister Oilouch, stated this was his first donation event since assuming the role of Minister of Health and Human Sources on January 21. He thanked Taiwan for its long-term support to Palau, which has boosted the morale of healthcare workers and improved the working environment in medical facilities. He looked forward to deepening Taiwan-Palau cooperation in health and medicine. (E)
