Ambassador Lee mentioned that after Taiwan’s Minister Lin led a group of business leaders to Palau in January, many entrepreneurs expressed significant interest in Palau’s sustainable tourism plans. This time, the delegation, led by Chairman Shih, aims to explore deeper cooperation and discussions in the high-end sustainable tourism industry, energy, education, and cultural and creative industries.
The visit received high attention and special treatment from the Palau government. On March 16, Ambassador Lee accompanied Chairman Shih and the delegation throughout the visit, during which they held an investment round table with Palau’s President, Surangel Whipps Jr., Speaker of the House Gibson Kanai, Governor of Koror State Eyos Rudimch, and relevant government officials. In the afternoon, President Whipps, along with Governor Rudimch, personally guided the delegation on-site visits to potential investment locations and introduced Palau’s tourism potential and investment advantages.
On March 17, in the presence of Ambassador Lee and Palau’s President Whipps and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gustav Aitaro presented Chairman Shih with the title of “Senior Economic Advisor.” At the same time, both parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU aims to leverage Taiwan’s successful industrial development experience to jointly promote Palau’s economic growth, create more investment opportunities, and enhance Palau’s regional and international influence. Chairman Shih emphasized that he will connect Taiwan’s traditional Chinese medicine research teams, the Academia Sinica, Lion Travel, and Porrima Corporation to share Taiwan’s development achievements with Palau. Both sides will collaborate extensively in multiple fields, including sustainable high-end tourism, energy, health, biodiversity, education, and cultural and creative industries, to promote innovative business models.
After signing the MOU, President Whipps will lead a delegation to visit Taiwan in May. During the visit, the President will personally visit the Porrima P111 ship upgrade project at the Kaohsiung Xingda Port and tour Wistron’s high-altitude wind energy test site, further advancing the cooperation plans between the two sides.
