From April 25th to 27th, the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) launched a Taro Bread and Taro Ice Cream Making Workshop at the Training Center of TTM in Nekken, Aimeliik. Taiwan ICDF, the headquarters of TTM, invited a food processing expert, Ms. Yi-Yi Lee, to conduct the workshop teaching Palauan to make bread and ice cream by using taros. Ms. Lee, a Bachelor of Food Science and Biotechnology in National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan, and a Master of Crop Production in Hohenheim University in Germany, has been Taiwan ICDF Project Manager of Food Processing Commercial Development Expert Dispatch Project in St. Kitts and Nevis.
During the three-day workshop, Ms. Lee made demonstrations of Taro Bread Making (including Taro Toast), Hand Mixing of Taro Bread Making, Ice Cream Making and Taro Cake Roll Making. Fourteen (14) participants attended this workshop from Dilisor Agriculture Association in Ngarchelong (DAAN), Palau-Taiwan Farmers’ Association (PTFA), women representatives of Ngeremlengui and the staffs of Ocean Star Hotel in Koror.
During the workshop, Ms. Lee introduced the standard operation procedures of baking and demonstrated how to use baking supplies and facilities to make different Taro products. Hopefully, through this workshop, the food processing technique and the interest in diversifying Taro Food can be further developed among Palauans.
All the participants have learnt with satisfaction the processing technique of making taro products. Due to limited space, this term of workshop was only available for members of some associations. The general public will have the opportunities to attend similar workshops in the 3rd and 4th quarters of this year be held by TTM.
