In the wake of acute drought impacting on agriculture and making the land barren the government of Taiwan has donated US$89, 000 to Swaziland towards the construction of a fish hatchery along the Nkomazi River, at Maguga in the Hhohho region, APA reports here Tuesday.
The Ministry of Economic Planning and Development through Principal Secretary Bertram Stewart said the project will enhance fish cultivation as Swaziland, being a landlocked country, is currently importing almost all fish products.
The Taiwanese Ambassador to Swaziland, Thomas Chen stated that the project would increase the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to food and nutrition security, thus meet the country’s goal of poverty alleviation and hunger eradication and boost sustainable economic growth for livelihoods of surrounding areas.
The Minister of Agriculture Moses Vilakati said, “Fisheries played an important role in food and nutrition in the country. Fish farming becomes the only plausible fisheries activity. More so fish stocks have been overfished in almost all water bodies in the world”.
The hatchery will also come with job opportunities for a lot of Swazis.
