On October 26–27, 2024, the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand successfully hosted a Mandarin Chinese language teacher workshop at the Chinese Association in Thailand. At the opening ceremony, Ms. Ann Hsueh, Secretary of the Education Division, delivered a welcome speech, encouraging the attending teachers to learn from each other and reminding them of the proverb "In a group of three, there is always one who can teach me." She expressed her hope that this training workshop would yield fruitful results for all participants.
The workshop was co-organized by Thai-Chinese International School. Its director, Mr. Chung-An Hsieh, noted the program’s richness, with real-time discussion groups and on-site teaching assistants to help participants download and use AI-related software, providing comprehensive support for the attendees.
The workshop included four sessions as follows: two days’ workshop attracted100 teachers from 80 schools. The first session, "The Fusion of Tradition and AI: Challenges and Innovations in Mandarin Chinese Language Teaching Materials," was led by Professor Chen Pin from National Kaohsiung Normal University. She began with an engaging "teaching points and perspectives" activity to break the ice, helping teachers get acquainted. She also introduced online tools like the "Bingo" game, alongside effective teaching methods that emphasized online resources for teaching Mandarin Chinese characters and vocabulary.
In the next session, "The Multi-Faceted AI Classroom: Leveraging Both Audible and Visible AI in Mandarin Chinese Classes," teacher Mr. Wei-yang Zeng from Chinese International School conducted a demonstration using Chat GPT 4.0, showcasing the diverse applications of AI in listening and speaking exercises, which was met with enthusiastic applause from the participants. Teachers were impressed by the power of AI and expressed a desire to further enhance their skills in this area.
In the "Transition from Tradition to AI: Practice and Reflection in Mandarin Chinese Language Teaching" session, Professor Chen Pin shared methods for designing listening assessments using Chat GPT and introduced Canva's AI tools. Teachers worked in groups for hands-on exercises, demonstrating innovative teaching results and further enhancing interactivity and enjoyment in the classroom.
Finally, in the session "A Magical Journey with AI: Innovation in Mandarin Chinese Cultural Teaching Materials," teacher Huang Xiang-yun guided participants in creating dragon-themed tote bags for the Dragon Year, exploring the interaction between traditional crafts and culture. She also utilized various AI tools to create Chinese culture teaching materials, expanding the possibilities of blending traditional culture with modern technology.
At the end, participants left the workshop with valuable insights and a strong eagerness to attend future sessions, while Ms. Ann Hsueh, representing the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, awarded certificates and joined group photos to commemorate the event.
