Tuvalu is a small South Pacific island country, it consists of nine small islets, its total area of about 26 square kilometers, the capital is located on Funafuti, around 2.6 square kilometers. Arable land is scarce, food vegetables rely on imports, coupled with fruits and vegetables are not easy to store, so the people of Tuvalu habitually favors the ingestion of meat products, a balanced diet over time, resulting in cardiovascular, diabetes, As a result, Tuvaluan are accustomed to consuming meat products, which has led to an unbalanced diet over time, resulting in a high rate of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
Since 2004, the Republic of China (Taiwan) Technical Mission has set up a demonstration farm on Funafuti Island. In 2006, it expanded the scale of the original demonstration farm to set up the "Friendship Farm" with an area of 0.55 hectares, and in 2015, it added the "Hope Farm" with an area of 2 hectares on the outer island of Vaitupu, as well as the "Wonderful Farm" with an area of 0.55 hectares on the outer island of Funafala, which is surrounded by Funafuti Island, in 2022. The "Wonderful Farm" on the outlying island of Funafala will be expanded by 0.2 hectares in 2022 in order to increase the demand for self-production of agricultural products in the country. At present, the "Friendship Farm", "Wonderful Farm" on the island and the "Hope Farm" on the outlying island, which are assisted by the technical team, are the only large-scale vegetable and fruit farms in the country and are also the only fresh vegetable and fruit markets. In addition, the Hope Farm on the outer islands also provides a steady supply of vegetables and fruits for the group meals of the Motufoua Middle School and for local residents.
Through the introduction of seeds, trial planting, demonstration of production, and the promotion of family gardens, the technical team demonstrates vegetable cultivation techniques and teaches cooking methods to the people of Tuvalu, so that the people of Tuvalu are gradually accepting the fruits and vegetables in their diets. Now that the concept of eating fruits and vegetables has been widely accepted and recognized by the people of Tuukuo, based on the existing foundation, this phase of the project has also been extended to the other six outlying islands of Tuukuo, and will continue to assist in the promotion of school vegetable gardens, expanding the promotion of large-scale family vegetable gardens, quantifying the production of fruits and vegetables in order to reduce imports, increase the rate of self-sufficiency, and international cooperation in the production of compost and other programs to strengthen the breadth and depth of the project.
