A check in the amount of $100,000 was presented to the Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Sports, Honorable Timi Melei today, by His Excellency Andrew Lin, Taiwan's Ambassador to Tuvalu.
The purpose of this donation is to support Team Tuvalu's participation in the upcoming Pacific Games, which will be held in the Solomon Islands next month.
Approximately 100 athletes from Tuvalu will be competing in nine different sports, including table tennis, weightlifting, powerlifting, middleweight, and rugby 7s, among others.
During his speech, Honorable Melei expressed gratitude to the Republic of China Taiwan for the generous contribution. He emphasized that this donation will not only allow Tuvaluan athletes to participate in the Pacific Games, but also enable them to showcase their talents, gain exposure to regional sports events, and foster friendships with athletes from other Pacific nations in order to promote sportsmanship.
His Excellency Lin expressed his optimism for Team Tuvalu's success in the upcoming Games, citing the participation of Ioane Hawaii, a Gold Medalist in Table Tennis, and Fiu Tui, a Bronze Medalist in the Middleweight class.
Team Tuvalu’s participation is co-funded by Taiwan and the Government of Tuvalu.
