Taiwan’s 2022 agricultural trade goodwill mission signed three letters of intent with U.S. agricultural industry associations on September 14, committing to the purchase of wheat, soybean and corn for 2023 and 2024, with a total estimated value of over $3.2 billion. Representative Bi-khim Hsiao of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States and 28 members of U.S. Congress attended the signing ceremony.
In her opening remarks, Representative Hsiao said that this agricultural relationship is another example of the mutually beneficial partnership between Taiwan and the U.S. After disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Representative Hsiao said that the resumption of this agricultural trade goodwill mission is an important signal of continuity as well as Taiwan’s renewed commitment to the bilateral partnership. Hsiao also noted that with strong bipartisan support from Congress, Taiwan-U.S. bilateral trade relations have continued to grow. Agriculture is an important part of the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st Century Trade, and negotiations will convene soon. Taiwan is committed to concluding high-standard and rule-based trade agreements to further enhance the trade partnership.
Members of Congress who attended the signing ceremony expressed their deep appreciation for the goodwill mission, acknowledging that increased purchases will enhance the export of American agricultural products, benefit American farmers, create jobs and make high-quality agricultural products available to Taiwanese consumers.
