Taiwanese American Heritage Week (TAHW), a holiday to honor the culture and achievements of Taiwanese immigrants in the United States, is one of the important events in Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. With the main theme of “Featuring Highlights of Our Past and Presenting Our Time-Honored Traditions in News Ways,” the 2021 TAHW presents a series of events and activities from May 29 to June 15, 2021, including the documentary “Behind the Scenes: Creation of 13 Tongues” by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. The screening will start streaming at 7 PM PST on June 6 until June 11. “13 Tongues,” created by Cloud Gate’s Artistic Director Cheng Tsung-lung, is a well-reputed production since its 2016 premiere in Taiwan; its world tour was postponed due to the pandemic. Through “Behind-the-Scenes: Creation of 13 Tongues,” the audience is able to know more about the creation of elements and Taiwanese culture represented in “13 Tongues” before watching it in theaters. Made by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and Cloud Gate, this documentary starts at Cheng’s hometown, Bangka, to portray Taiwanese daily life and culture. The production team members, such as music artist Lim Giong, art designer He Jia-sing, projection designer Ethan Wang, and costume designer Lin Bing-hao, talked about their artistic concepts in this piece.
