To demonstrate their support for a robust Taiwan-New Mexico relationship, the New Mexico State Legislature established its “Taiwan Friendship Caucus” on November 16, 2022. Mr. Louis M. Huang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA), was invited to attend the establishment ceremony of the caucus.
At the establishment ceremony, Director General Louis M. Huang stated that Taiwan and New Mexico established a sister statehood in 1985. The two sides have enjoyed a close cooperation in economy, trade, cultural affairs and education. In 2021, Taiwan was the sixth-largest export market and the seventh source of foreign direct investment in New Mexico. In the meantime, Taiwan and New Mexico share universal values, such as freedom and democracy. The establishment of the “Taiwan Friendship Caucus” in the New Mexico State Legislature symbolizes a new chapter of the Taiwan-New Mexico relationship. Looking into the future, Taiwan and New Mexico will make their friendship more robust and mutually beneficial.
In their speeches, the leaders of the New Mexico State Legislature, including State Senator Harold Pope (D) and State Representative Patricia Roybal Caballero (D), recognized the achievements of the Taiwan-New Mexico cooperation over the years and hoped that the partnership between Taiwan and New Mexico could be further strengthened in the future.
