The Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program (TFETP) was launched by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to recruit foreign English teachers and teaching assistants. The aim of this program is to provide more opportunities for Taiwanese students to improve their English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the elementary and secondary level.
To be eligible to teach English in public schools in Taiwan, candidates must be native speakers with a bachelor's degree or higher, and must have a clean criminal record. Additionally, a state-issued teaching license or credential is required for teachers, but not necessary for teaching assistants.
The monthly salary for English teachers in Taiwan varies based on the teacher’s highest level of education and teaching experience (service length). It ranges from NT$65,230 to NT$100,010, which is roughly equivalent to US$2,200 to US$3,340 (subject to exchange rate). Additionally, English teachers are eligible for benefits such as airfare allowance, health insurance, performance bonus, housing allowance, and other benefits.
English teaching assistants work with local teachers to create an immersive English learning environment that encourages students to actively learn English and improve their overall English proficiency. As a benefit of the program, teaching assistants receive a monthly stipend in the amount of NT$48,000, roughly equivalent to US$1,600 (subject to exchange rate), plus travel subsidy, health insurance, and other benefits.
