The Foreign and National Defense Committee of the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China was invited to attend the 24th Supervisory Board meeting of the World Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, which was held in San Francisco from March 9th- 11th. Over 700 Taiwanese business representatives from all over the world gathered at this conference. The Legislative Yuan’s delegation, which amounted to 11 members in total, was led by Jin-Ping Wang. The legislators included: Yu-Ling Lu, Ying Chen, Chi-Chen Chiang, Chih-Wei Chiu, Shih-Fang Liu, Chun-Hsien Lin, Shih-Ying Tsai, Freddy Lim, and Yu-Jen Hsu. During his opening ceremony speech on March 10th, Jin-Ping Wang, former president of the Legislative Yuan who led the visiting delegation, demonstrated the success of Taiwanese businesspeople in countries all around the world. He expressed that the development of Taiwanese businesses abroad is an influential extension of Taiwan’s national power. He affirmed that the Taiwanese government is taking active steps to improve the investment environment in Taiwan and encouraged businesspeople abroad to bring their investments back into Taiwan. The delegation visited the Taipei Economic and Culture Office in San Francisco on the morning of March 9th to hear Director General Joseph Ma’s briefing on Taiwan’s diplomatic relations. During his speech, Ma commended Taiwanese expatriates for their hard work in expanding Taiwan’s diplomacy. Former president Wang also discussed the recent passage of the Taiwan Travel Act, which will allow senior government officials to travel freely between Taiwan and the U.S. This is a big step not only for U.S.-Taiwan relations, but for Taiwan’s diplomacy globally. During noontime of March 10th, the visiting delegation gathered at the Culture Center of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Milpitas, along with overseas Taiwanese community leaders in Northern California, as well as over 30 overseas Taiwanese organizations in the Bay Area, to engage in a discussion about various overseas Taiwanese community affairs. Over 500 individuals were present. Former president Wang expressed his admiration towards the many successful overseas Taiwanese companies and individuals in Northern California who actively participate in their mainstream community, growing the U.S. government’s support towards Taiwan.
