On 30 September, Taiwan’s Mission to the WTO, on behalf of the government, donated US$ 20,000 to the Special Trust Fund set up by the WTO to help with the travel costs of the delegations of Least Developed Countries participating in the 7th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva from 30 November to 2 December 2009.
In addition to sending a letter of thanks to the Mission, the WTO Secretariat also issued a press release on 21st October complimenting the government of Taiwan on its generosity.
WTO Director-General, Pascal Lamy, welcomed this new contribution, which demonstrates Taiwan's continuous support to help developing countries in benefiting fully from the multilateral trading system.
In the same press release, Taiwan's WTO Ambassador, Mr. Yi-fu Lin, is quoted as saying that his government has always supported Least Developed Countries with the aim of increasing their trading capacity and improving their participation in the global marketplace. He adds, “Trade can play a major role in contributing to development and to lifting millions of people out of poverty.”
