An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan at 11:50 pm on Tuesday, 6 February 2018, causing severe damage. As of 12 February, 17 deaths were reported, as well as 1 person missing and 291 injured. The Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) was immediately called into action. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, 2 shelters, 20 rescue dogs, 500 soldiers and many paramedics were deployed at the scene, in a huge effort to rescue the trapped persons and care for the injured.
During these darkest hours, we have received concern and condolences from many WTO delegations. On behalf of my government and people, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for the concern and condolences conveyed to us. The disaster relief work continues, while we mourn the victims, care for the injured and pay tribute to the rescue and aid workers.
