Taiwan celebrated the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China (Taiwan) last night. In honour of the special day a soiree was hosted by the Taipei Liaison Office in the Republic of South Africa at the beautiful Centurion Golf Estate with a couple of hundred parliamentarians, dignitaries, diplomats, countrymen and distinguished guests in attendance.
Guests were treated to captivating performances, delicious food, patriotic symbolism and cultural traditions.
His Excellency, Representative John Chen, Representative of the Taipei Liaison Office, delivered his Opening Speech to a captivated audience, with his remarks proving to be both enlightening and inspirational. Past accomplishments were recognised and future plans were unveiled.
Representative Chen went on to make special mention of the people of Taiwan, lauding them as the ‘driving force’ behind Taiwan’s success. His patriotism for his country and his pride in what Taiwan has achieved was almost palpable and permeated the evening’s festivities.
Taiwan’s new political direction under the leadership of newly elected President Tsai Ing-wen was also highlighted and her administration’s policies for revitalising Taiwan’s economy and ensuring Taiwan is at the forefront of green and technological developments were emphasised.
President’s Tsai’s desire to bring Taiwan closer to the world while upholding the universal values of peace, freedom, democracy and human rights and to continue to deepen relationships with friendly democracies was accentuated in the Representative’s speech.
A wonderful line-up of performances, by various groups ranging from the Nan Hua Temple Troupe, to students from the Pretoria Chinese School and the Amitofo Care Centre (ACC), culminated in vibrant traditional dances by the indigenous people of Taiwan and kept the guests entertained and enthralled.
