Director General David Cheng-Wei Wu with all staff of TECO were pleased to attend Taiwan Spotlight Event for Taiwanese artist, Li Jiun-Yang, in the closing week of 24th Biennale of Sydney.
In DG Wu’s remarks, he said that Taiwan is renowned for its fascinating blend of asia-pacific, Western influences, as well as traditional and modern cultures. We can easily find all those elements in Li Jiun-Yang’s paintings, simply reflecting the diverse and inclusive society in Taiwan. Most importantly, we gather here to show our support for the Freedom Of Expression, the Freedom Of Arts, the Freedom Of Free Will at this special occasion today coincidentally.
Dr. Sophie McIntyre and Ms. Billie Phillips then led a panel discussion. They highlighted that Li’s two art pieces on spot, “Kau-pue Temple Fair: The Immortals” and “Bamboo swordsman”, inherited the vernacular aesthetics developed as early as 1980’s in Taiwan. They also discussed the potential impacts to Mr. Li’s works from the development of democracy, indigenous cultures, religious heritage, and more.
Li Jiun-Yang is a self-taught and versatile creator, who works on temple paintings, movie posters, calligraphy, Taiwanese glove puppets, sculptures, and multi-media installations, and this is the first time that his works are exhibited in Australia.
