The International Tour of Taiwan Gourmet Cuisine kicked off its first African event in Cape Town on September 15, bringing a rich aroma of authentic Taiwanese flavors. Organized by the Cape Town Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce and hosted at Home Bao, the venue was filled with distinct elements of Taiwan. The event aimed to promote Taiwanese cuisine internationally and showcase Taiwan’s culinary soft power.
Chefs Chang Ko-chin and Lu Kai-yuan used local ingredients to demonstrate four traditional Taiwanese dishes: Finger-licking Rib Salad, Candied Sweet and Spicy Pork, Smoked Fish Sweet Osmanthus Sauce, and a vegetarian dish, Lemon Pulled Chicken. They explained the preparation process and unique characteristics of each dish, with their expert cooking techniques creating a feast of vibrant color, fragrance, and flavor, to the delight of the guests. English translations by Woon and Tina ensured that everyone could follow along, creating a lively atmosphere filled with eager questions and engaging interactions with the chefs.
The event was co-hosted by the Cape Town Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce and Home Bao, a Taiwanese street food business founded five years ago by second-generation Taiwanese entrepreneur Tina, who has gained local fame as a Master Chef contestant and media personality. Her products, including gua bao, salt and pepper chicken, dumplings, and steamed buns, are sold in major supermarkets. The event also featured Taiwanese snacks, Kavalan whiskey, and Taiwanese bubble tea, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. With nearly 100 guests enjoying a delightful afternoon of Taiwanese cuisine, everyone is looking forward to next year’s culinary events, which will continue to Durban, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Newcastle, and Uganda.
