The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomes the visit by Tomáš Kopečný, Czech Governmental Envoy for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, who is in Taiwan March 18 and 19 at the head of a delegation of two, following a previous visit in November 2023.
On March 18, Governmental Envoy Kopečný met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu to exchange opinions on international aid plans for Ukraine. Minister Wu stressed that Taiwan had been providing needed assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. Cooperation between Taiwan and the Czech Republic on assisting Ukraine, he said, could become an enduring force for good. Governmental Envoy Kopečný thanked Taiwan for its help, stating that bilateral cooperation on Ukrainian assistance programs had resulted in access to clean drinking water for tens of thousands of Ukrainians. He expressed hope that the two sides would continue to assist Ukraine through this difficult time.
Governmental Envoy Kopečný was appointed by the Czech prime minister. He has spared no effort working on joint Taiwan-Czech programs to assist Ukraine, rebuild basic infrastructure, and improve the lives of people in war-torn areas. He was instrumental in facilitating the signing of Taiwan-Czech memoranda of understanding on rebuilding basic infrastructure and medical care facilities in Ukraine on November 10 and December 1 of 2023, respectively. The agreements call for cooperation on rebuilding water treatment facilities and gas-fired cogeneration power plants as well as Ukraine’s primary healthcare system.
MOFA will continue to work with the Czech government to back Ukraine against authoritarian expansionism. These joint efforts are a concrete manifestation of mutual support and humanitarian assistance among democracies, with the aim of enhancing the welfare of the Ukrainian people. (E)
