2017 Taipei Summer Universiade concludes with praise in Taiwan
The 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade concluded in fanfare on the evening of August 30 capping 13 days of competition. The International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Oleg Matytsin in a press conference heartily praised Taipei City for putting on a highly successful event. He also thanked Taipei City on behalf of all participating athletes for a wonderful experience.
The 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade competition officially ended Wednesday August 30, 2017 with the conclusion of the men's water polo final. Taiwan's host team in the name of Chinese Taipei ranked third overall on the final medal tally, bagging 90 medals comprising 26 golds, 34 silvers and 30 bronzes.
The top winner at the event was Japan, which took home 101 medals, including 37 golds, followed by South Korea, which earned 82 medals, with 30 golds.
This year's Universiade also saw the setting of two new world records. The first was by Taiwan's weightlifter Kuo Hsin-chun in the women's 58kg category. In her final lift of the event, she set a new world record of 142 kg in the clean and jerk. The second world record breaker was South Korean recurve archer Choi Mi-sun, who scored a total of 687 points during her qualification round.
In addition to the two new world record holders, Taiwan's javelin thrower Cheng Chao-tsun also set an Asian record with his 91.36-m throw. Furthermore, 36 Universiade records were set throughout the 13-day competition.
Altogether there were more than 11000 athletes from 141 countries participating in the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade in Taiwan. All in all over 70,000 local and international staff associated with the event as well as the 19,000 volunteers who had made the Universiade possible, successful and memorable.
The key reasons for the games' success had been the excellent performances of the Chinese Taipei athletes and the overwhelmingly passionate support of Taiwanese people. More than 700,000 tickets had been sold for Universiade events, accounting for a total ticket sales of 83 percent. Souvenir sales have also reached an impressive height, totaling over US$1 million.
