GuoGuang Opera Company, Taiwan’s only national-level Jingju troupe, will present the Malaysian premiere of "Jingju Magic" at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC) July 12-14, followed by two shows at the George Town Festival (GTF) in Penang July 20-21. In total, 5 classic excerpts will be presented throughout the tour.
Themed “Jingjin Magic”, GuoGuang will generously present three sets of programme during their first Malaysia tour, each comprises two excerpts. The first features “Lu Wenlong” and “Zhuangzi Tests His Wife,” whereas the second is formed by “The Death of Zhou Yu” and “Guiying’s Accusation of Wang Kuei at the Temple”, both to be staged at the KLPAC. Moving on to Penang, the company will perform “Avenging Zidu”, which is deemed an ultimate test for a wusheng (male martial art role), and “Zhuangzi Tests His Wife”. These classic excerpts will showcase not only GuoGuang’s meticulous attention to traditional repertoire, but also how the performers use their attainments honed over long years to take the audience to delve into the world of jingju and experience its magic.
An impressive cast of 29 performers and musicians will take the stage to present the repertoire. In addition, there’s a reason why GuoGuang has a huge following at home and abroad—all performances have Chinese and English projected surtitles, with fonts, speed, and number of texts carefully designed. Whether you’re a veteran jingju fan or a first-time goer, you will be able to emerge yourself into the story/performance and enjoy.
