Representative Phoebe Yeh of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia hosted the 113th National Day Reception of the Republic of China on 3 October, 2024. Around 1,000 guests attended this joyful event.
Representative Yeh said 2024 would be also a year of fruitful abundance for Taiwan. The forecast for GDP is about 3.9%, the highest level since 2021. On economic performance, semiconductor and AI are two main driving forces for Taiwan, especially on semiconductor. Substantial economic ties between Taiwan and Malaysia have continued to grow. The booming of semiconductor and E&E industries and close links of the supply chains play a very essential role in the economic and trade relations. The bilateral trade amount was 27 billion US dollars in 2023. Taiwan is Malaysia’s 5th largest trade partner. For years, Taiwan has been the 8th largest source of FDI for Malaysia. Taiwan’s investment has created the 3rd largest number of employment with 400,000 jobs, next to Singapore and Japan. Malaysia remains one of the largest sources of Taiwan’s foreign students, as well as inbound tourists. For the past 7 decades, over 100,000 Malaysians have been pursuing higher education in Taiwan, with more than 10,000 students are currently studying right now. On the tourism side, 460,000 Malaysians visited Taiwan in 2023, which was number 1 among ASEAN.
Representative Yeh stressed that Taiwan people cherishes the important values of democracy, innovation and diversity. As our new president Lai Ching-te emphasized that Taiwan will promote values-based diplomacy, alliance diplomacy, and economic and trade diplomacy. People in Taiwan treasure life of freedom, and would like to maintain the status quo on cross strait relations. Taiwan will continue to work closely with partner countries including Malaysia to maintain regional peace and stability.
