On behalf of Representative Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang, Deputy Representative Steven Tai graced the Alumni of Taiwan Universities & Colleges (ATUC)’s 39th anniversary dinner cum presentation of diligent study awards ceremony on 6 May 2017. Other guests included advisers and commissioners from the Overseas Community Affairs Council, office bearers of the Taipei Business Association, the United Chinese Library and the Alumni Associations of Taiwan Universities in Malaysia, and officials from the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore.
In his address, Deputy Representative Tai highlighted Taiwan’s wish to build more mutually beneficial relationships with 18 countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Australia through its New Southbound Policy. He pointed out that during a group interview with representatives of six media outlets from South and Southeast Asia, namely, The Hindu from India, Kompas from Indonesia, The Sun from Malaysia, The Philippine Daily Inquirer from the Philippines, The Straits Times from Singapore and The Nation from Thailand, President Tsai Ing-wen had emphasized that the New Southbound Policy is based on economic complementarity and seeks to strengthen cooperation with target countries in talent cultivation, domestic market development, manufacturing industries and small and medium enterprises.
Deputy Representative Tai also commended ATUC for serving as a bridge of friendship and goodwill between Singapore and Taiwan. Stressing the value of a good education, he urged Singaporean youths to seize the opportunity to study in Taiwan by applying for the various scholarships administered by the Taiwan government.
Subsequently, at the ceremony to present “Diligent Study Awards” to elementary, middle and high school students, Deputy Representative Tai presented a number of diligence awards and a special S$300 award to the top scorer of the high school category.
