The world’s first Open Compute Project Certification Testing Center was kicked off by ROC government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute March 3 in Hsinchu County, northern Taiwan.
Established to provide global validation services in support of the OCP Foundation for open sourced hardware established by Facebook in 2011, the center conducted OCP’s first global certification, ITRI said.
The launch ceremony was presided over by ITRI President Shyu Jyuo-min. He was joined by Chiueh Tzi-cker, general director of ITRI’s Cloud Computing Center for Mobile Application, and Charlie Manese, vice president of Channel Development at The OCP Foundation.
According to Shyu, OCP is an important specification standard in the global cloud computing sector. ITRI, under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, has developed sufficient software expertise on cloud systems and laid a firm foundation for Taiwan’s information technology firms to offer comprehensive solutions and services for overseas clients, he added.
Richard Lee, chairman of Taiwan-based IT firm Inventec Corp. and president of Cloud Computing Association in Taiwan, said the center will help Taiwan’s cloud computing sector incorporate cutting-edge trends in cloud data centers. It is also expected to help Taiwan advance as a key link in the global OCP supply chain.
The center will assist Taiwan in developing inexpensive and competitive software and hardware solutions for cloud data centers, making Taiwan an international powerhouse in the field, Lee added.
Echoing Lee’s remarks, ITRI said it expects Taiwan’s cloud computing firms to build on the momentum of the center and branch into the sector’s international supply chain.
Companies from around the world are invited to have their cloud computing equipment validated at the center, the ITRI added.
