On April 9, 2019, Director General Eric Huang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago visited Indiana and made a speech before the Indiana Senate in the State Capitol.
In his remarks, Director General Huang stated that the Indiana educational system is strong and praiseworthy, demonstrating great achievements, especially in higher education. Renowned universities, such as Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame, attract many Taiwanese students to further their studies in Indiana, bringing what they’ve learned home to Taiwan and contributing to society in many walks of life.
In addition, the Hoosier State has established a well-known university in Taiwan. The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods from Indiana founded a key part of Providence University in Taiwan. Thus, Indiana has nurtured the talents of many people who have gone on to lead Taiwan.
Director General Huang also expressed thanks for Indiana’s support for bilateral trade between the United States and Taiwan and for backing of Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, such as the World Health Assembly, is critical for Taiwan to protect its people from infectious diseases and to contribute to the international community.
The Director General particularly mentioned that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, an American law that lays the foundation of US-Taiwan relations. Taiwan deeply appreciates the assistance that the American people and government have provided for Taiwan.
The Indiana Senate passed Resolution SR13 immediately after Director General Huang’s speech. All the State senators in the Chamber stood and gave the Director General a big round of applause. Many senators approached him and shook hands with Director General Huang.
