On 17 February, the European Parliament adopted the “Report on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy” with 474:113:102 and the “Report on the implementation of the Common Security and Defense Policy ” with 369:197:123.
The reports reiterate the parliament’s support for Taiwan in a number of areas, including by:
1. Strongly advocating for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations and for deeper EU-Taiwan cooperation, including a bilateral investment agreement;
2. Calling for the urgent start of an impact assessment, public consultation and scoping exercise with regards to a BIA with Taiwan;
3. Expressing grave concern over China’s continued military maneuvers aimed at Taiwan or in Taiwan’s ADIZ, and calling on China to stop such destabilizing actions;
4. Reiterating its opposition to any unilateral action that may undermine the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and that any change to cross-strait relations cannot be made against the will of Taiwan’s citizens;
5. Calling on the EU to work with like-minded partners to establish partnerships with democratic Taiwan;
6. Denouncing China’s coercion against Lithuania and other countries, expressing solidarity with Lithuania and welcoming the EU’s move to launch a case against China in the WTO over Lithuania.
The two reports also provide insights into the EP’s views on enhancing the EU’s geopolitical heft, and strengthening the EU’s foreign policy decision-making and defense mechanism. They also examine the EU’s relations with Africa, Latin America and the Indo-Pacific, as well as important issues regarding the Eastern Neighborhood, and Transatlantic cooperation. Furthermore, the CFSP report condemns the ongoing human rights violations in China and the undermining of Hong Kong’s autonomy.
We express our sincere appreciation to the cross-party Members of the European Parliament for supporting Taiwan.
