We express our sincere welcome and gratitude to the European Parliament for its adoption of a resolution on ‘People’s Republic of China’s misinterpretation of the UN resolution 2758 and its continuous military provocation around Taiwan’. The resolution, passed on 24 October 2024, strongly condemns China's military provocations and continuous misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 to block Taiwan's international participation.
The resolution explicitly states that UN Resolution 2758 does not determine China's sovereignty over Taiwan and denounces China's attempts to misinterpret this resolution to obstruct Taiwan's engagement in international organisations.
It also condemns China's recent large-scale military drills simulating a blockade of Taiwan and calls on China to cease its persistent military intimidation tactics. The European Parliament rejects any unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, especially through force or coercion. It emphasises that it is the Taiwanese people who have the democratic right to determine their own future. The resolution also highlights China's increasing military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, which disrupts the balance of power and poses a threat to regional and global security.
This resolution once again demonstrates the international community's firm opposition to China's malicious misinterpretation of UN resolution and its firm support for Taiwan's democracy and security. Taiwan will continue to work with the EU and other like-minded partners to maintain peace and stability in the region and uphold the rules-based international order.
