
Representative Hsieh and Mrs. Hsieh were at the Kreta Ayer People’s Theatre on the night of 16 December 2012 to lend their support for the performance put up by Ming Hwa Yuan Taiwanese opera troupe. Turnout at the opera performance was overwhelming with one thousand seats in the theatre filled to capacity.
In his speech at the theatre, Representative Hsieh shared with the audience that opera show or literally known as “Ge Zai Xi”, is a traditional folk opera which originated from Taiwan. It is a product of Taiwan and they formed the fundamental basis of Taiwanese community culture. Faced with the challenge of continuity and succession, Mr Hsieh paid compliments to the devoted cultural artistes from Ming Hwa Yuan which he had credited for giving the Taiwanese opera culture a new lease of life by blending technology with modern art of cultural expression and thus further confirmed their roles as the main “driving force” in the promotion of Chinese culture. Representative Hsieh noted that there are many Singaporeans who are ardent fans of Taiwanese operas and he expressed optimism that the performances put up by Ming Hwa Yuan would help to further enhance cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Singapore.
Ms Sun Tsui-feng, the leading opera artiste from Ming Hwa Yuan Taiwanese opera troupe, also went on stage to introduce the characteristics of Taiwanese opera. Through the performances of Ming Hwa Yuan, she reckoned that the audience will be able to get a better understanding of the creativity of Taiwanese culture.
Artistes from Ming Hwa Yuan put up two separate opera performances of different plot on 16 December 2012, a comedy theme opera entitled “Lovebird Spears” and a war theme opera entitled “General of the Empire.” Both performances earned the delight of the audience at the theatre.
