The population of ethnic Chinese in Hawaii is 202,141 (roughly one hundred thousands of them are mixed descendants of intermarriage). Dr. SUN Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, and many other important figures spent some time living or studying here. The Government of Hawaii is a long-time friend to Hawaiian Chinese communities, eagerly promotes multicultural and diversified economical developments and cares about the development of local Chinese communities.
The Hawaii State maintains a close relationship with both the provincial and local governments of the Republic of China. Besides the sister relations between Hawaii and Taiwan, Honolulu City and Kaohsiung City, Hawaii County and Hualien County, Maui County and Pingtung County, and Kauai County and Penhu County have also signed sister-city agreements. The government of Hawaii State set up a liason office in Taipei in 1994. The Hawaii Tourism Authority also established a branch office in Taipei.
