PRC Continues to Distort the UNGA Resolution 2758 to Exclude Taiwan’s Contribution to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

Press release No. 016
Regarding the statement issued by the Representative of the Mission of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the United Nations in response to Palau’s and Belize’s statements highlighting Taiwan’ contribution at the meeting of the High-level Political Forum on July 12th, which falsely claimed sovereignty over Taiwan, deliberately mischaracterized UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and wrongfully associated it to the so-called "One China Principle," Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-NY) strongly objects to this erroneous statement and reiterated its position as follows:
- UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 only addresses the issue of China’s representation in the UN. It made no mention of Taiwan. It does not authorize the PRC to represent Taiwan in the UN system, nor does it state that Taiwan is a part of the PRC. The Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent sovereign state. Taiwan has never been part of PRC. It is the internationally recognized objective reality as well as the status quo that neither democratic Taiwan nor Communist China is subordinate to the other. Only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent its 23.5 million people in the UN system and international community. The government of the PRC has no right to comment.
- Member States have the rights to decide which countries they would like to engage with. China’s deliberate imposition of its fictitious “One China principle” on international organizations and other countries infringes on the political independence of other countries and will only lead to further resentment from the Taiwanese people and the global community.
- Seeking meaningful participation in the UN system and making contributions to the international community is the shared expectation and consensus of the people of Taiwan. The PRC’s distortion of the Resolution 2758 has long deprived Taiwan of the right to participate in the UN System. It also denies the international community an opportunity to benefit from Taiwan’s contribution. TECO-NY condemns these PRC’s efforts, which already infringed on the UN principle of universality and contradicts the spirit of “leaving no one behind.”
