As a means of connecting and reinforcing links with Taiwanese overseas students, the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK hosted an annual meeting for Presidents and committee members of Taiwanese student societies on Saturday 9th November, 2019. The gathering, which took place at King’s College London (KCL), was chaired by Dr Nicole Yen-Yi Lee, Director of the Education Division.
The event was attended by 82 students in total, representing 45 student societies from universities across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The student societies each took advantage of the event to elect their respective new Presidents, whilst also voting for an overall Taiwanese Student Society representative covering the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
The group received a warm welcome from Mr David Y. L. Lin, the Representative for Taiwan in the UK, who encouraged the Taiwanese students in a speech to strive for academic success and personal enrichment. The participants were offered guidance on personal safety issues and were urged to promote study in Taiwan at their universities and to take part in official ‘Study in Taiwan’ events wherever possible.
Representative Lin also advised the students to maintain close contact with the Education Division and make use of the various services and forms of support provided by the Taipei Representative Office in the UK. Employees from the Taipei Representative Office’s Cultural Division, Press Division and Science and Technology Division attended the event to introduce their own services and initiatives aimed at Taiwanese students.
Dr Lee then promoted the Yushan Scholar Programme, encouraging the assembled scholars to return to Taiwan after graduating from their respective universities in order to use the skills and experiences fostered during their time in the UK to contribute to Taiwan’s future development. Furthermore, the Director of the Taiwan Trade Centre in London was present to discuss Brexit and its potential implications.
