The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has set up the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship programme with a view to encouraging Taiwanese and European universities to establish or expand academic cooperation via school-to-school partnerships, and attract students from Europe to apply to come to Taiwan to study Mandarin and engage in exchanges with Taiwanese students.
The Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship programme is open to all students who wish to apply for a scholarship to study in Taiwan regardless of student status (degree or non-degree) or university department, and disciplines are not limited to the Mandarin studies or sinology. The programme allows European students to pursue further studies in Taiwan in their original fields of interest and expertise, which will enable them to contribute to the cooperation between Taiwanese and European industries in the future. This will allow Taiwan to make a positive addition to people-to-people exchanges between Taiwan and Europe, in line with the European Union’s Europe-Asia Connectivity Strategy and the United Kingdom’s vision for Global Britain.
In addition, MOFA hopes the scholarship programme will encourage Taiwanese universities to further build their capacity in bilingual teaching and establish bilingual environments. Furthermore, when scholarship students are in Taiwan, MOFA hopes they can help with English teaching to enhance the English language proficiency of Taiwan’s general public, and assist Taiwan in achieving its policy goal to become a Bilingual Nation by 2030.
- Timeline: The timelines for the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship vary in accordance with participating universities. Usually, applications will open in February (for Spring and Summer entry) or in May (for September entry).
- The universities in Taiwan will help the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship recipients to apply for a special entry permit, enabling the recipients to apply for a visa to enter Taiwan.
